    Solar Edge monitoring stopped working

The SolarEdge monitoring app has stopped displaying any data for 2023. Our installer says that SolarEdge has decommissioned the 3G cellular service and we will need to pay $500 for them to order the 4G cellular module because SolarEdge warranty won’t cover it.
When we bought the system, it was our understanding that the warranty is for the whole system and now they’re splitting the necessary component to communicate back to their servers for monitoring and software updates. Cellular technologies keep changing so it looks like customers will be on the hook every time the manufacturer discontinues any component.
Is this going to be normal going forward?

Yup, convert single one time sale to a long term chain if revenue.

I'm guessing that you don't have internet access, so you can use ethernet?

Rather than using a cellular interface on the inverter, maybe you could use the ethernet interface and a home internet solution? It's not cheap, but all the major carriers have this ability. Just search for "cellular home internet".

Might be better than trying to update the cellular interface on the inverter...you'd have to just check the cost trade-off.

Thank you. We do have Internet at home and yes, it looks like a better long term option to use a WiFi extender to hardwire the built-in Ethernet port rather than depending on cellular communications that keeps on jumping generations and having to pay an arm and a leg to be forced to upgrade.
We dream of 25 year warranties without reading the exception in fine print. All the while our utility company and regulators-in-cahoots keep inching up our true-up charges.

WOW ! Not to happy to read these posts. I too did not read the small print and after one year my Solar Edge invert stopped working. Voltage Solar out of St Pete Fl. Did the job ( horrible experience) and very poor follow up and they are gone. Out of business for quite some time. Trying to get another solar company to touch the system is impossible. We went from paying high FPL bills to paying low bills and a solar system payment to a rising electricity bill with a solar system payment.
Momentum Solar said remove the panels and get new ones from them and they might help.
Anyone know of a reputable company??? Or is that not a qualification for a solar company.

Which is why I will not do business with most of the solar installers here in Florida.

But didn't you say you'd never get solar because the ROI is to long?

Yes. The main reason is the high cost of solar installers. Getting them to come down at or below $2/watt is impossible to do.

If so, I'd use one that doesn't peddle SolarEdge. But at your relatively cheap electricity rates, that's not worth worrying about.

Unfortunately most of the installers here peddle Micro Inverters even if I don't want them. Also solaredge seems to have a major market share for solar here.

I believe Solar Edge has the largest market share in the USA.
